چکیده

Usually, fatigue tests on fibre-reinforced composites are performed in uni-axial tension/tension or tension/compression fatigue [1], providing the S-N data. Although bending fatigue tests are not widely accepted as a standard, they are used a lot for research purposes [2] and they do have some important advantages [3]. In case of three-point bending fatigue, the history of bending force versus midspan displacement is recorded. In [3], the authors examined a standard three-point bending set-up for fatigue testing of thin composite laminates. It was concluded that this set-up was not suited because (i) the large midspan displacement, caused by the specimen’s low bending stiffness, limited the test frequency in the fatigue test; (ii) the apparent hysteresis in the force-displacement curves was entirely due to friction between specimen and supports, and (iii) the computational demand for the finite element simulations was very large, because modelling of friction at the supports had to be taken into account.

Quasi-Static Three-Point Bending of Carbon Fiber Sandwich Beams With Square Honeycomb Cores

Sandwich beams comprising identical face sheets and a square honeycomb core were manufactured from carbon fiber composite sheets. Analytical expressions were derived for four competing collapse mechanisms of simply supported and clamped sandwich beams in three-point bending: core shear, face microbuckling, face wrinkling, and indentation. Selected geometries of sandwich beams were tested to ill...

Deleterious localized stress fields: the effects of boundaries and stiffness tailoring in anisotropic laminated plates

The safe design of primary load-bearing structures requires accurate prediction of stresses, especially in the vicinity of geometric discontinuities where deleterious three-dimensional stress fields can be induced. Even for thin-walled structures significant through-thickness stresses arise at edges and boundaries, and this is especially precarious for laminates of advanced fibre-reinforced com...

Bending and Free Vibration Analyses of Rectangular Laminated Composite Plates Resting on Elastic Foundation Using a Refined Shear Deformation Theory

In this paper, a closed form solution for bending and free vibration analyses of simply supported rectangular laminated composite plates is presented. The static and free vibration behavior of symmetric and antisymmetric laminates is investigated using a refined first-order shear deformation theory. The Winkler–Pasternak two-parameter model is employed to express the interaction between the lam...

3D FEA Modelling of Laminated Composites in Bending and Their Failure Mechanisms

This paper developed three-dimensional (3D) Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to investigate the effect of fibre lay-up on the initiation of failure of laminated composites in bending. TsaiHill failure criterion was applied to identify the critical areas of failure in composite laminates. In accordance with the 3D FEA, unidirectional ([0]16), cross-ply ([0/90]4s) and angle-ply ([±45]4s) laminates m...

A Modified Three-rail Shear Test for Fatigue of Composite Laminates

In the standard three-rail shear test, as described in “ASTM D 4255/D 4255M The standard test method for in-plane shear properties of polymer matrix composite materials by the rail shear method” the specimen is clamped with bolts. This however, requires drilling holes through the specimen, which of course is not ideal for composite materials, because of the occurring damage around the holes. Fu...
